Jazan University organizes a "Mountain Avalanche" workshop in partnership with the Geological Survey

Jazan University Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Hassan bin Abdullah Ishaq, inaugurated a workshop on "The phenomenon of mountain avalanches in Jazan region", which was organized by the University in partnership with the Saudi Geological Survey Authority at the Faculties of Computer Science and Engineering auditorium, this morning, in the presence of representatives of the region's secretariat, the branch of the Ministry of Transport, and the Civil Defense.
Dr. Ishaq stressed the importance of the role played by the Geological Survey through specialized teams in monitoring and field studies, with the participation of the relevant authorities, to come up with recommendations that contribute to finding appropriate solutions to rock landslides and ward off their dangers.
The Director of the Geological Hazards Center, Eng. Turki Al-Sahli, gave an introduction to the Geological Hazards Center, and the most important consultations and technical studies provided by the Center to government agencies and the private sector to stave off geological hazards.
Geological engineer Mr. Muhammad Al Kathiri explained the dangers of mountain avalanches and the justifications and importance of studies related to rockslides, and the importance of field work and careful field survey in interpreting the phenomena of mountain avalanches.
The Director of the National Program for Earthquakes and Volcanoes, Eng. Khaled Youssef, gave a presentation on the tasks of the National Program for Earthquakes and Volcanoes, the causes of seismic activity and its impact on rockslides, in addition to evaluating the extent of their impact on infrastructure and society.
Dr. Hassan Bashel also gave an introduction to the project to study mountain avalanches in the Jazan region, which was carried out by the Commission, and reviewed the methodology of the studies required to study the phenomenon of mountain avalanches.
Subsequently, the Director of Civil Protection and the Volunteers Division of the Civil Defense in Jazan, Lt. Col. Muhannad Zeilai, provided an overview of the approved emergency plan and the measures taken by the Directorate of Civil Defense in the Jazan region to confront rockslides if they occur, and statistics about the rockslides that were monitored.
