Abstract

The Second International Saudi Coffee Research Forum provides a multidisciplinary platform to examine the scientific, environmental, economic, and cultural dimensions of Saudi coffee production and innovation. This forum brings together leading researchers, industry stakeholders, and policy experts to address critical challenges and opportunities in the Saudi coffee value chain, with a particular focus on sustainable agricultural practices, climate resilience, and technological integration. The scientific program is structured around four central themes: (1) Enhancing Saudi coffee production systems through pest and disease management, climate adaptation strategies, and land and water resource optimization; (2) Advancing sustainability and innovation via precision agriculture, biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and improved post-harvest processing techniques; (3) Investigating the socio-economic, cultural, and health impacts of coffee cultivation and consumption, particularly in rural and mountainous regions; and (4) Strengthening the competitive positioning of Saudi coffee through branding, market diversification, value chain development, and public–private partnerships. Through the integration of scientific research and practical applications, the forum aims to support the transformation of Saudi coffee into a globally competitive crop. It further seeks to inform national strategies for agricultural diversification, rural development, and economic sustainability aligned with Vision 2030.

Conference Themes

Theme 1: Saudi Coffee Production: Opportunities and Challenges

This theme will explore successful local and international experiences in developing agricultural systems for Saudi coffee. It will highlight the role of scientific research in devising effective solutions to combat coffee diseases and pests. Key topics include common threats to coffee crops, methods of control, biological pest management programs, and the use of modern technologies for prevention. The discussion will also address the challenges posed by climate change on coffee cultivation, particularly in mountainous regions. Issues such as securing irrigation water for terraced farms and identifying suitable lands for coffee cultivation will be examined, along with potential solutions to overcome these obstacles.

Theme 2: Sustainability and Innovation in Saudi Coffee and the Coffee Industry

This theme focuses on the role of scientific research in promoting sustainable coffee farming and production in Saudi Arabia. It emphasizes modern, eco-friendly agricultural practices that improve productivity and enhance crop quality in mountainous environments. Topics include water harvesting techniques, innovative irrigation systems, organic fertilization methods, and their contributions to long-term sustainability.
The theme will also explore the application of biotechnology and artificial intelligence in improving coffee quality and yield. It will examine innovation in coffee processing and fermentation methods and their impact on flavor and quality. Furthermore, it will highlight how technology and innovation can enhance the efficiency of coffee processing industries and review international quality standards in coffee production.

Theme 3: Cultural, Economic, Social, and Health Dimensions of Saudi Coffee Cultivation and Consumption

This theme explores the multifaceted impact of coffee cultivation on local communities, emphasizing its role in shaping rural lifestyles and reinforcing cultural and heritage identity through Saudi coffee. It examines the evolution of the domestic coffee market, shifting consumer behaviors, and their implications for the local coffee industry.
In addition, it addresses the role of coffee farms as economic assets that promote eco-tourism, alongside the various health and social effects associated with coffee consumption.

Theme 4: The Competitive Advantage of Saudi Coffee in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

This theme focuses on the competitive strengths of coffee-growing regions in the Kingdom and outlines strategies for developing and investing in Saudi coffee to position it as a competitive crop both locally and globally. It explores avenues for increasing domestic production and reducing import dependency through strategic public private partnerships.
Key discussions include building strong Saudi coffee brands, enhancing international market presence, and establishing effective export and marketing strategies. The theme also addresses the role of fair trade in improving smallholder farmers' income, the logistical challenges within the supply chain, and opportunities to strengthen value chains in the coffee sector. Moreover, it highlights prospects for producing coffee-derived products—such as cosmetics, food, and beverages—and strategies for advancing local roasting and packaging industries. Finally, it underscores the importance of farmer training programs and entrepreneurship development for farmers and their families to promote long-term economic and social sustainability in the sector.
