As sufficient numbers of trained Saudi healthcare providers are essential for the kingdom's ambitious healthcare plans to bear fruit, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will be in need of more graduates of colleges of Medicine and medical sciences in the long run.

The small city of Jazan, the capital of the Jizan region, comprising 13 districts and accommodating one and a half million people, is a relatively remote city in the south of the kingdom that suffers from a myriad of health problems and a high rate of mortality.  Reports have pointed out the dire need for reforms in the healthcare sector, and the establishment of a faculty of medicine addressses these conditions.  The Faculty of Medicine in Jazan was established according to a royal decree in 1421, and in 1422 directives of the Ministry of Higher Education had entrusted its establishment to King Abdul Aziz University before it eventually became part of the new Jazan University.

Graduating medical personnel capable of partaking in the existent healthcare programs and participating in providing preventive and treatment services, along with others who are already working in the health centres, will certainly help raise the standard of health conditions in the region, which is the main aim behind establishing this faculty in Jazan.

The Jazan Faculty of Medicine has adopted a modern approach to the curriculum, according to which basic medical sciences and clinical medicine are taught in concert to emphasize the close connection between them.  Health problems are also taught against the larger backgrounds of the social, economic, and environmental conditions of the region
